Today, Malaysia has firmly established itself as one of Asia's most popular international holiday destinations, and it is becoming a favorite among Indian travelers too.
For someone planning their first trip abroad, Malaysia has plenty going for it. There are more than 200 direct flights every week between India and Malaysia, connecting 11 Indian cities, including Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. For eligible Indian passport holders, Malaysia also offers visa-free tourist entry for stays of up to 30 days until 31 December 2026, subject to the country's entry requirements. This makes it even easier to turn that long-discussed holiday plan into an actual trip.
And the best part? You do not need a long holiday to get a feel for Malaysia. Five days is enough to experience the country at a comfortable pace, provided you know where to go, what to prioritize, and how to move between destinations.
If Malaysia has been on your travel wish list, our practical five-day itinerary will help you make the most of your time, manage your budget, and discover the country's highlights without spending your holiday worrying about what comes next.
Before you set out on your Malaysian adventure, there are a few things worth knowing that can make your first trip more comfortable and enjoyable:
Malaysia is a year-round destination, but the weather can vary between regions, so there is no single "best month" for the entire country. This matters for a five-day itinerary because you will be combining Kuala Lumpur, Genting Highlands and Langkawi, which can experience different weather conditions.
If you’re planning to visit Langkawi’s beaches and take advantage of the outdoor activities, then this particular itinerary is best done in December to March. Kuala Lumpur is hot and humid all year round and can have rain even in the typically drier months.
If you are travelling during the Indian school holidays, the Christmas-New Year period or other peak travel dates, book flights and hotels earlier, as prices can rise with demand.
Getting around Malaysia is relatively easy, particularly between the destinations included in this itinerary. Kuala Lumpur has MRT, LRT, monorail, buses and ride-hailing services to help you get around the city. Alternatively, you can take the KLIA Ekspres between the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and KL Sentral. The non-stop trip takes about 28 minutes.
If you are following our five-day itinerary, flying from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi is the most practical choice. A flight saves considerable time compared with combining road and ferry travel.
Once you reach Langkawi, you can use taxis, ride-hailing services, private transfers or a rental car depending on your plans. If you want to visit several attractions in one day, booking transportation in advance can make things considerably easier.
Malaysia’s currency is the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR/RM). Hotels, shopping malls and many restaurants take cards widely, but it is still useful to carry some cash for smaller eateries, markets, and local purchases. For Indian travellers, we suggest to check the international transaction and currency conversion charges of your bank before you start using your debit or credit card too much.
Staying connected is also relatively easy. You can buy a local Malaysian SIM or eSIM from major telecom providers, including at airports and authorized outlets. If your phone supports eSIM, arranging one before leaving India can be convenient because you can have mobile data ready soon after landing.
Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, malls and restaurants, but having mobile data is useful for Google Maps, ride-hailing apps, translations, flight information, and contacting your travel companions.
Now you know what to expect before travelling, it’s time to plan the fun bit. This 5-day itinerary is for first-time Indian travellers who want to see the major highlights of Malaysia without spending most of their holiday in transit. Your trip begins in Kuala Lumpur, then moves to Batu Caves and Genting Highlands, and ends with a laid-back visit to the island of Langkawi. Here's a detailed look at the 5-day Malaysia itinerary:
Arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport and make your way to your hotel. If you are staying near KL Sentral, the KLIA Ekspres takes about 28 minutes from KLIA Terminal 1. From KL Sentral, you can connect to the MRT, LRT, monorail or a ride-hailing service.
Keep your first day fairly relaxed after your flight. In the evening, head to KLCC and the Petronas Twin Towers. You can admire the towers from outside or book a timed visit to the SkyBridge and Observation Deck. If you plan to go inside, book ahead because visits operate on scheduled time slots.
End the evening around Bukit Bintang, where you can shop, explore Jalan Alor, and try Malaysian delicacies such as nasi lemak, satay or roti canai.
Where to stay: KLCC, Bukit Bintang or KL Sentral.
Start early and head to Batu Caves, particularly if you are travelling with family. The famous golden Lord Murugan statue and the colorful steps make this one of the most memorable stops around Kuala Lumpur. Comfortable shoes and a bottle of water are highly recommended.
Return to the city after exploring the caves and spend the afternoon discovering Kuala Lumpur's heritage areas. Visit Merdeka Square, see the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and walk through Central Market for local handicrafts and souvenirs.
Continue to Petaling Street in Chinatown, where you can browse shops and sample local food. If you still have energy in the evening, return to Bukit Bintang for shopping or dinner. This day works best when you group the attractions together rather than trying to cross Kuala Lumpur repeatedly.
Travel tip: Start Batu Caves early to avoid the strongest afternoon heat.
After breakfast, drive to Genting Highlands. This mountain resort is famous for its cooler climate, entertainment, shopping and attractions. You can take a bus, a private transfer or a day tour organized by a company.
One of the highlights is the cable car journey. The Awana SkyWay takes around 10 minutes from Sky Sentral to Genting Highlands Station, with a complimentary stop at Chin Swee Station, where you can visit Chin Swee Caves Temple before heading to the peak.
At the top, choose activities based on your group. Families can spend time at the theme parks, while others may prefer shopping, restaurants, and scenic viewpoints. Do not try to cover every attraction in one day. Pick two or three experiences you genuinely want and leave some time to explore at your own pace. Return to Kuala Lumpur in the evening and keep your night easy because you will be flying to Langkawi the next day.
Take a morning flight from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi. With only five days available, flying is the sensible choice because it leaves you with most of the day to enjoy the island.
After checking into your hotel, head towards Oriental Village and Langkawi SkyCab. The cable car takes you towards the Machinchang Range, reaching around 708 meters above sea level. From the upper stations, you can enjoy wide views across the island and Andaman Sea.
If weather conditions permit, visit the SkyBridge, which extends 125 meters across the mountain landscape. Spend your evening around Pantai Cenang. Walk along the beach, watch the sunset and choose one of the many restaurants for dinner.
Travel tip: Check SkyCab operating conditions before leaving your hotel because weather can affect mountain attractions.
Keep your final day flexible according to your flight time. If you have a late departure, you can take an island-hopping trip, explore Langkawi's mangroves or simply spend a few hours at the beach.
For travellers who want more nature, Kilim Geoforest Park is worth considering. Its mangroves, limestone formations and waterways offer a very different experience from the beaches and cable car attractions.
If you would rather slow down, have a relaxed breakfast, spend some time at Pantai Cenang and shop for souvenirs before heading to the airport. Langkawi is also known for duty-free shopping, so you can leave some room in your luggage.
Keep your departure time firmly in mind and leave for Langkawi International Airport with plenty of buffer. If you have an early flight, skip the morning excursion and enjoy a relaxed breakfast instead.
The idea for your final day: do not chase another checklist. Leave Malaysia with one last good memory.
